2009-2010 Honorable Mention Anthony Shepherd Rousak (Sussex Technical High School)
"Compassion in the Abrahamic Traditions"

  1. Anthony Shepherd Rousak, named for his two grandfathers and father, is a native Delawarean who lives near Rehoboth Beach, with his parents.  He volunteers for the Red Scarf Project; Delaware Hospice Festival of Trees; Stockings for Soldiers (Delaware); HALOS (Helping And Lending Outreach Support) of Charleston, South Carolina and Children & Families First (Delaware).  He is also involved in the Sussex County HAMFEST (ham radio).  He attends Sussex Technical High School, where his major is Electronics.  Anthony is a current member of the National Technical Honor Society and the National of High School Scholars.  He is a member as well as this year’s secretary of his school’s National Honor Society.  Also, Anthony is a member of the Sussex Technical High School Bowling Club.  He worked as an Elections Clerk for the 2008 Primary and General elections.  This year, Anthony plans to incorporate stewardship principles in his STEM (Senior Technical Exhibition of Mastery) project.  He plans to attend college next year.

By participating in this contest, Anthony feels he has gained a deeper and more compassionate understanding of other religions.  He has a greater view of religions, and how the founders of the Abrahamic faiths truly embodied their respective beliefs.  Now, he feels he has new insight into human potential, and believes that people can unite together, despite their difficulties.

My compassion reflection: The strongest thought in his essay is how compassion and consideration can be used to help people, especially the less-fortunate, lead more humane lives, overcome suffering, and eventually reach success.
