2009-2010 Honorable Mention Maria Motta (Hudson High School)
"Compassion for Single Mothers"

  1. My name is Maria Motta, and I am an eleventh grade student at Hudson High School. For the past seventeen years, I have lived at home with my mother and older brother.  My mother raised my brother and me almost entirely by herself, and she was the inspiration of my essay. I come from a Catholic background, but as I have grown I’ve become open to exploring many religions. I enjoy the feeling of working for what I want, so I spend most of my free time at work. Although I work most days of the week, my favorite hobbies are cooking, kickboxing, and shopping. I also enjoy going out to dinner and staying in to watch movies.

  1. The FFC Essay contest have influenced me in two ways. Before participating in the contest, I had never considered my thoughts on the word compassion. Now, after much research and consideration, I have a strong idea on how to be a compassionate person from day to day. Furthermore, the essay gave me a chance to see what religion is all about. Although both my parents are Catholic, I cannot remember the last time I went to a Sunday Mass. I appreciate this opportunity because by looking through the Bible, I now have a better understanding of the teachings and words of God.

My compassion reflection: The most powerful thought expressed in my essay is to not judge people before you know their story. In the situation of Jesus and the blind man, the deciple automatically assumed the worst when he noticed a blind man walking down the street. On the other hand, Jesus did not judge the man, he instead, helped him out. I think it is very important for everyone to have an open mind the way Jesus did towards the blind man, because everyone has a different life story. If we don't take the time to learn their story, we inturn miss out on a lot in life.
