2009-2010 Fourth Place Winner Claire Boston (Montgomery Blair High School)
"Compassion in the Abrahamic Traditions: A Call for Activism”

Claire Boston is a sophomore in the Communications Arts Program at Montgomery Blair High School in Silver Spring, Maryland. When not being responsible and doing homework, she can be found doing PR work for her school’s robotics team, obsessively following various fashion weeks, reading international editions of Vogue, and hanging out with her friends. Claire is also a member of the Blair crew team. Next year, she will try to find time to work on her school’s newspaper staff as well.

t the beginning of this contest, my knowledge of the Abrahamic faiths was pretty much limited to a comparative religion class in 8th grade Sunday school and the handful of Bar Mitzvahs I attended. Before beginning my research, I wasn’t aware of all the parallels between the three religions. It was interesting to compare each faith’s discussion of compassion, and I feel I am more knowledgeable about each religion and their founders as a result of this contest.

My compassion reflection:  The founders of the Abrahamic faiths demonstrated compassion through their steadfast devotion to both their followers and the ostracized. Compassionate people today must take cues from the prophets and stay devoted to working to solve the world’s conflicts, no matter how long these conflicts have been going on.
